Tom Craik
Tom Craik

First Name/ Last name : Tom Craik

Country/City : I was born in Scarborough, Ontario, lived their for a year or so, but grew up in Kelowna playing in the forest. I've lived and played in Vancouver/North Vancouver since 1997.

Date of birth / Age : I was born November 24th, 1973 and I'm 36.

Best results /records / adventure : Racing at all distances, so far up to 50k, is always a blast. I wheeze, go lactic, and constantly comparing my past with my present. As I have steadily improved over the last couple years, it makes me proud to log faster times through hard work. It makes me most proud and happy however, doing adventure runs with friends. Runs where the trail is unknown, long, and grueling. Runs like my 2007 circumnavigation of the base of Mount St. Helens and a 2008 run from Rim to Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon.

2010 Events Calendar / 2010 Objectives : Like many others, I set my goals back in January. One of my goals was to run a 50 miler and I recently registered for Stormy, in Squamish. Stormy is in early August and in later August I am registered for Trans Rockies in Colorado. Between now (April) and then I will take part in the 5 Peaks series and most certainly Iron Knee, a local trail race across the North Shore mountains of Vancouver.

Why do you practice Trail Running ? : Their really is nothing like the open-minded feeling I get from trail running. The trails seem to be the magic elixir that helps me leave the rest of my world behind. I always come out of the trees smiling and mentally relaxed...even if I worked hard.

What are the various sports that you practice as a supplement to Trail Running ? : Growing up in Kelowna I was always outside playing. Most often it was unstructured free play in the woods on mountain bikes or up skiing at Big White, where I spent most of my time in the bumps and learning to telemark. There's also nothing like a muddy mountain bike race on fast switch-backs and technical downhill, or a long road ride to burn the quads a little. Anything outside to be honest.

What is your best memory ? : After finishing the Grand Canyon run we boarded a bus back to our tent. In our stinky, sweaty clothes we chatted with a couple from someplace in the mid-USA. They'd been out on the view point I guess and wondered where we had come from. We told her we ran from rim to rim to rim and she was shocked. She turned to her husband, mouth hanging open, and told him what we'd done. He looked back at her, laughed, and said, "you're so gullible, honey. He's kidding you." We smiled, let it be, and were so proud of what we'd achieved. It's a must do trail run.

What/Where is your favorite Trail ? : I'm so lucky to live in North Vancouver where we can run technical, forested trails all year round. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say it's hard to choose a favourite. I suppose any trail where I can leave the sound of traffic and the hustle bustle of life behind. Specifically there's a trail near home that goes up through Lynn Valley, past Norvan Falls, and into Hanes Valley, behind Grouse Mountain. As the crow flies it's close, but you feel isolated and alone on a trail few people pass over. Once you reach the top, you have a gorgeous view of Vancouver and Georgia Straight, and the luxury of a cold beer and nachos.

What is the best advice which you could give to Trail Runners ? Go out the door with no expectations. Explore like a kid. Let it be free and unstructured. Lose the watch and enjoy the mud, rocks, roots, and...the unknown ahead.

Best results /records / adventure : 1st overall Storm the Trent, ESAR, podium at Raid The North, Frontier Adventure Challenge, Logs, Rocks and Steel, Bjorliden Arctic Mountain Marathon. Did the Rock and Ice Ultra 3-day ski race, the Salomon Dontgetlost.ca Giant's Rib Raid 6-hr adventure run and the Boston Marathon within the same month last spring.

2010 Events Calendar / 2010 Objectives Reduced schedule - dealing with a damaged meniscus: Frontier Adventure Challenge Deerhurst, Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon and hopefully back to racing in the fall/winter - Logs, Rocks and Steel, FAC Fall Classic, Canadian Ski Marathon.

Why do you practice Trail Running ? : Caledon hills mostly. We have a lot of great trails. My commute is all trail running in summer and skiing in winter.

What are the various sports that you practice as a supplement to Trail Running ? : Adventure Racing, Mountain Biking (Recumbent), kayaking, XC skiing, strength training.

What is your best memory ? : So many! Some amazing racing on the Lower North Shore near Labrador, 24 hr rogaines in Arizona, watching the sun come up during overnight races in Ontario or on the trail during my commute at -32C. Paddling the Nahanni or Haida Gwaii, multi-day canoe, hiking and ski trips all over the world.

What/Where is your favourite trail ? : Again, too many to narrow down. I love biking the hardwood trails at Albion in Caledon right near our backyard. The Rockwall route in the Rockies is pretty spectacular, as was the Kepler track in New Zealand.

What is the best advice which you could give to Trail Runners ? The worst run on the trail is better than commuting by car, once you get going. Just getting out there is the biggest challenge - and once you do, having to stop is the hard part.

Date of birth / Age : July 25/1970

Best results /records / adventure : I'm fairly new to the sport (3rd year) and don't consider myself an elite runner, but I got some decent results last couple years ...

-5th overall Ultimate Xc Val Morin 2008 10k ... all the top runner's were in the 21k and 42k!!

- 3rd at Xtrail Orford 2009 10k (age group 30-39) ...I have my podium picture if you don't believe me :) Again the top guys were running the 21k :))

- 3rd overall five peaks sutton 2009 enduro course.... I don't know where everybody was (LOL) but I finished only a minute behind fellow flight crew

Martin Ladouceur. He was of course recovering from an injury and to his own personnal opinion «out of shape», but still... I was very proud!

- 3rd overall Course en forêt Montmorency 2010 10k (snowshoe race) .... Man did I work hard for that one, even if again the top guns were running the 21k...

2010 Events Calendar / 2010 Objectives :

May 8 - Course en forêt Mont Gleason 10k ---- obj- top 10

May 29 - Xtrail Sutton 21k ---obj- top 20 and to cut 15 minutes on my `09 time

June 5 -Course en forêt Stoneham 10k ------obj- top 10

June 26 -Ultimate XC Mont Tremblant 35k ---- obj top 20 and a healthy finish (both mentally and physically :)

Aug 22-27 - Gore-Tex TransRockies Run Colorado -- obj --- 6 days of running alongside my partner/friend/brother-in-law Luc Hamel, maintain a steady pace and to cross the finish line mentally sane :)

Sept. 17 Five Peaks Sutton 21k --- obj- Have fun, enjoy myself as I still will be recovering from TRR!

Sept. 25 - Relais du Lac Memphremagog (team relay 117km) - obj -- to represent Le Club de Trail Le Coureur and at the same time help a great foundation for school dropout prevention.

Oct. 16 - XTrail Orford 21 k -- obj - top 20 and to cut 20 minutes from my '08 time

Why do you practice Trail Running ? : As oppose to road running ... to be in relation with the natural elements, trees, water, mud, roots, animals, rocks and fresh air!! I love to hit the trails with friends and to push myself hard! It goes without saying that it also allows me to keep the weight off and to have the ''not so occasionnal'' beer!!

What are the various sports that you practice as a supplement to Trail Running ? : Hockey, yoga, X-Fit, mtb biking.

What is your best (SPORTS) memory ? : Being named on the Salomon Flight Crew after winning the «Tell us your Story» last year certainly ranks up there with a few hockey championships and every time I see the finish line of a race and I realize I’m not dead .
